Did you add private photos to the group? If you added a photo that is viewable by all to a private group, then anyone can view it or comment on it if they are logged in.

Are you sure the picture that was commented on was not in any other groups and that the photo itself was flagged private?

Also, if you add photos that are "Available to everyone" to a private group, they will still be viewable by anyone, it's just that only people on the group will see that they are in the group ;)

Also, from the photos I looked at, you don't appear to be restricting people from leaving comments.

Hi all,
Thanks for the help everyone I'm a little bit clearer on things now.
I think!

Zack, I didn't restrict people from leaving comments because I thought it was a private group and only members would be seeing and leaving comments on pictures.
I'm a bit confussed, Whats the point of having a private group if the pictures are open to everyone on flickr, is there away round this, that only members will be able to see pictures.

Yes, set all your photos to private. You can do that in the organizer using the permissions menu. You can also upload them as private.

Then, no one will see them except for any members of groups you may add them to.

If you are the admin of the group, you can change the settings for whether or not non-members can see the group pool and/or the group discussions.

But this is an admin choice even if the group is public.

The only difference between a public and private group is whether or not the group can be found in a search.

If it's a private group, there is no setting to display/not display the pool and discussions, because by its nature the group is hidden.

Dang, a private group has less overall control than a public one then?

What do you see when you go to this URL?

Colleen, only a member of a private group can see the private group (well, invitees can also see it - different problem).

it's not about less control, it's about not having the need to turn off discussions or the pool for the public -- the public cannot see the group at all.

ColleenM  Pro User  says:

Ok, so OP's problem was that the images were viewable on his photostream, right?

A private group automatically has the view-discussions and view-pool choices turned off, and even if you know the URL, you can't 'peek'.

Gotcha.

That is the URL of a private group. The oops screen is what anyone should see if they click on the URL of a group home page and are not a member.

Was a non-member able to see the group? It sounded like you had public images on your photostream. Anyone can see those and leave comments (unless you have comments turned off).

If this was happening, it's a major bug, and we'd have heard about it before.

The non-members who saw your photos probably just found them some other way, like by clicking on your icon.

Now that you've made your photos private, no one will see them unless you put them into your private group (then only members of the group will see them).

Roy57 Non-members of your group can see your public photos -- that has nothing to do with your group. When I visited your stream earlier, I could see 900+ photos there. Anyone on the internet could have seen them at that time.

A private group can only be seen by the members of that group or invitees to that group.

A public ("anyone can see") user's photostream can be seen by anyone -- via searches or random browsing.

If your group is private, then if someone gets a direct link to that group, they will see the "oops" message.

As it stand now, your stream is private and i get the "Roy57 has nothing available to you" message. So, it seems that you are now good to go.

I'm curious:

Does a private group show on the photopage? Can you see that it's in a private group if you aren't a member of that group?

The latest image in my photostream is now in two group pools, the one linked above and "Belleville". Can anyone see the second group?

The only people who ever even know of the existence of a private group are the members of the group and anyone who's been invited to join it.

Its existence is hidden everywhere to anyone else, otherwise it wouldn't be very private, would it? :)

zyrcster  Pro User  says:

Hence the term, "private" :)

Of course, the only hole in that privacy is the fact that invitees have viewing access to the pool and to the discussions, and there is no way to un-invite a lurker.

ColleenM  Pro User  says:

So, I can hide my profile from searches, make my images private, only post them in private groups, and never 'talk' in a public group.

As far as I can tell, that would completely hide my existence on Flickr from anyone that wasn't a) a member of my private groups, or b) someone I'd sent a guest pass to.

(as long as I could keep out of the Help Forum, anyway)

edit: ignoring the lurking invitee problem, of course.

No, I really like the public discussions I'm involved in and don't mind most of my images being public as well. I have, from the beginning, posted some that I thought had commercial potential as private and put them in a private group that a few local photographers participate in.

Hil, I still confussed. But the problem is sorted I think.
Thanks.
Zyrcster, when you saw my photos 700+ of them would have been part of my private group pool photos, which was private for a long time.

So non members can see photos on a private group because you were able to see them.
What I had to do, is change the photos to friends only, then change the members from contacts to friends. That has seemed to work.

I should have stayed public then block the group pool from non members. (If only I know that at the beginning)

Patrick Costello  Pro User  says:

No - I don't think you've got it yet.
Two separate things. The status of pics in your stream and the status of the group.
if your pics are public - which they were - then anyone can see them. It doesn't matter what groups you put them in.
If your pics are private - which all but 28 are now - then you can choose to share them more selectively. If you add a private pic to a group then members of that group can see it.

So I can see 28 pics in your stream. If you have other private pics I can't see them. Even if you have added them to a private group, I still can't see them. However, if I'm a member of your private group, then I'll be able to see 28 pics in your stream + whatever pics you post to the group.

ColleenM  Pro User  says:

It is the privacy flag *on the photo itself* that controls who can see the image.

If a photo is "viewable by all", (green button), it is viewable by anyone on the internet whether or not they are signed in to Flickr. If they are signed in to Flickr, they can leave a comment (usually).

If a photo is "private-friends" or "private - family" (yellow button). Then it can only be seen by contacts you have given 'friend' or 'family' status to who are signed in to their accounts.

If a photo is "private-you only" (red button), then you are the only person who can see it.

All of these settings are overridden by posting the image to a group. Once you post an image to a group, any group member can see it if they are signed in.

The photo's privacy does not change. But you do give group members the privilege of seeing your photo no matter what privacy level you have set on it.

If it is private (yellow or red) only group members or people you have given 'friends' or 'family' status to will be able to see it, ever.

If it is green anyone can see it, always.

Hi Patrick. Now i am am confused or i'm i.

Here goes. I have a private group but the pictures were public so that means anyone could see them even thou the group is private.

so now I made the photos private just for friends, so that means only my friends can see them and if the members are not down as friends but just as contacts they wont be able to see them. so If i change the members from being contacts to friends they will be able to see the pictures.
But I didn't need to do that, because if i keep the photos as private and the members as contacts and put the photos on a private group the members will be able to see them weather they are friends or not.
How that.

Correct

so now I made the photos private just for friends, so that means only my friends can see them and if the members are not down as friends but just as contacts they wont be able to see them.
Incorrect.

That means that
a) only your contacts that you call 'friends' can see them
AND b) anyone who is a member of a group where you post them can see them even if they are not your contact.

You do not need to make group members contacts. They can see your private images if they are members of the group where you post the pictures.

If the group is public or private makes no difference.

Yes - that's it :-)

Once your pics are private you have control over who sees them.
The group option is one route, but requires your intended audience to join that group.
Or you can make the images private/friends&family, then select which of your contacts you nominate as friends&family. That way they can see the images when they visit your photostream.
You can even share with people who aren't Flickr members by creating a guest pass with the appropriate permissions.

Still not there.

If you have a photo which is marked 'public' then everyone can see. If you have it marked private F&F then only those that are F&F can see it. If you put it into a group then ALL members of the group can see, regardless of whether they are contacts, F&F or whatever.

If you have a group that is private then no one can see the group and its pool of photos except for those who are members of the group.

NOTE the group, and the photo are two different things.

True, but if the only point of the group is to share images specifically with those members, then there's a good chance they'll be contacts anyway!
