About Graffiti Archaeology

TIMELAPSE PHOTOS OF GRAFFITI WALLS.

Graffiti Archaeology is a website about how graffiti-covered walls change over time. It's a timelapse collage of photos of certain walls, taken over a span of months or years.

This group is a place for people to submit photos for use in this project, and discuss what's in them. If you have photos you'd like to add, please join the group!

We're mainly interested in places that get covered with layers of new artwork over time. Free walls, hall-of-fame type spots, etc. are ideal. But any wall that looks like it has some history is a good candidate.

Here are some more specific rules for what kinds of photos belong in the pool:

(1) Time. An individual photo should show a wall that has clearly been repainted, or is likely to be repainted in the future. The goal is to create groups of photos showing the same wall with different layers of artwork at different times.

(2) Type of artwork. Any type of artwork is welcome. It doesn't have to be graffiti: stencils, stickers, posters and other art are all fair game.

(3) Tagging. if possible, please tag each photo with the name of the city, and some unique name that identifies the location. (If the spot is secret, then make up a name that means something to you.) Also please try to estimate the date if it's not already in the photo's EXIF data.

(4) Angle of view. closeups are always welcome if they show interesting detail, but at least a few wide shots are necessary in order to create a collage of any given wall.

(5) Licensing. by adding a photo to this group, you're signalling that you'd like it to be incorporated into the Graffiti Archaeology project. To make this process easier, please make sure each photo is covered by a Creative Commons license that doesn't prohibit derivative works. (Your photos will be attributed to you, regardless of whether your license requires it.)

(6) No special effects. Please do not submit photos that have been heavily post-processed to look like watercolor or charcoal, or any other special filters. A bit of contrast and color correction is always welcome, but extremely oversaturated or tinted images are very hard for us to use. It's better to submit the original photo, and leave the processing to us.
